Chris Heider Bio
Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Since grade school, I dreamed of performing for live audiences and making a living through music. Over the years, that dream has taken me through weddings, festivals, personal setbacks, unexpected opportunities, and unforgettable moments that shaped who I am as a musician and songwriter.
I began performing professionally in 1977, playing wedding ceremonies for friends shortly after high school. Those early performances quickly turned into regular bookings, and before long I was playing multiple weddings every week. With every show, my confidence grew and so did my belief that music could someday become more than just a passion.
Life, however, had other plans.
In 2012, during a difficult period financially and personally, I was forced to sell my only guitar — a Martin 12-string I had owned for years. Letting it go felt like giving up part of myself. But that same Christmas Eve, my nephew Noah Rauch surprised me with an Alvarez guitar and said something I’ll never forget:
“No man should be without his guitar.”
That gift reignited everything. I started playing again, writing songs again, and rediscovering my love for performing.
A few years later, another nephew, Kevin Heider — an accomplished guitarist and songwriter — encouraged me to begin recording my own music. He taught me the basics of home recording and generously shared equipment and guidance that helped me bring my songs to life. Much of the music featured on this site exists because of his support and inspiration.
One of the defining moments of my musical journey came in 2013 when my son, Benjamin, arranged for me to perform at an open mic event during the Newport Folk Festival. I nearly missed the ferry to the venue, had no idea what song I was going to perform, and stepped onto the stage in front of hundreds of people wondering if I truly belonged there.
I performed my original satirical song Cocaine Crazy, and the audience response surprised me completely. After the show, folk radio host Nick Noble approached me and asked if I had recorded the song because he wanted to play it on his radio program. Hearing my music later broadcast on public radio was a turning point in my life — one that made me realize this dream was still alive.
Today, I continue performing original music, covers, weddings, private events, restaurants, wineries, fundraisers, and house concerts. My style blends heartfelt storytelling, folk influences, humor, honesty, and life experience into performances that connect with audiences in a genuine way.
I may still be “just passing through,” but I’m grateful for every stage, every listener, and every opportunity to share my music along the way.

Chris's vocals and guitar playing are smooth and easy to listen to, whether pure and simple strings and voice or making tasteful use of technology to back up and augment his sound. He is truly a singer-songwriter worth visiting.
Being our last show at Xenia's X*ACT Whistle STop, we wanted to end the series with a bang. The Chris Heider Band dinot disappoint. Their performance was one of the best shows we had for the entire series! Chris really knows how to put together a great show bringing with him Bob Farley, Don Winegar, Marceia Cornwell, and Sue Miller who rank as some of the top musicians in the area. If we at the Xenia Area Community Theater decide to put on another music series Chris will be the first we ask to return.
I have years of experience as a session player and producer. Chris's songs are intelligent, inspirational, musically logical, and worthwhile. His voice is unique and emotive, a proper singer in the folksy rock niche in which he writes and sings.
